Years Compressed Into a Moment

This weekend my youngest son Cody graduated from high school
Like most graduations, the ceremony lasted a couple of hours.
His walk across the stage lasted a few seconds.
The diploma fit neatly in his hand.
And yet, that's not what I found myself thinking about.
I kept thinking about everything that happened before that moment.
The rehearsals.
The performances.
The struggles.
The wins.
The friendships.
The late nights.
The growth.
Years of becoming compressed into a single moment.
That's the funny thing about milestones.
The world celebrates the visible event.
The diploma.
The funding announcement.
The acquisition.
The promotion.
The product launch.
But those moments are never the whole story.
They're simply the visible result of hundreds or thousands of invisible moments that came before them.
As founders, we often fall into the trap of chasing milestones.
The next customer.
The next investor.
The next revenue target.
The next hire.
The next round.
And while those moments matter, I've come to realize that the real value isn't created when you reach the milestone.
It's created while you're becoming the person capable of reaching it.
Watching Cody this weekend reminded me of that.
His graduation wasn't the accomplishment.
It was the recognition of years of effort that had already happened.
The milestone wasn't the story.
The journey was.
As I get older, I'm finding that this lesson applies far beyond startups.
It applies to relationships.
It applies to family.
It applies to health.
It applies to life.
We celebrate the milestone.
But we grow through the journey.
