Most founders overbuild

Yesterday I did something simple for happy hour that got me thinking about founders

Instead of making a spinach and artichoke dip and serving it with bread on the side, I combined everything into one
Spread it on crostini
Put it in the oven
Done
Simpler
Easier to eat
Easier to share
Same ingredients
Better experience
And it made me think about how early stage founders build
Most founders overbuild
They add more features
More functionality
More “value”
They try to anticipate everything a customer might want instead of focusing on what actually matters
But customers don’t want complexity
They want something that is easy to understand
Easy to use
Easy to adopt
The best early products are not the ones that do the most
They are the ones that solve a clear problem in the simplest possible way
In the early days, simplicity is not a lack of ambition
It is clarity
It forces you to focus
It forces you to listen
It forces you to get to what actually matters
Because the truth is, most founders don’t struggle because they are missing features
They struggle because their product is not clear
And when something is not clear, it is hard to sell
Hard to explain
Hard to get adoption
Sometimes the unlock is not adding more
It is simplifying what is already there
If you are building right now, ask yourself one question
What can I remove that would make this easier for a customer to understand and use
You might be surprised how much better things get when you do less
If you are thinking about raising capital, this matters even more
Simple companies are easier to explain
Easier to position
And easier for investors to understand
If you need help getting clear on your story and your process, that is exactly what I built the Funding Accelerator System for
Until next time—keep building.
Cheers,
Steve Walsh
